Eric Wainaina is one of Kenya’s most influential singer-songwriters, known for music that blends Kenyan Benga, Soukouss-inspired guitar lines, pop harmonies, and traditional instrumentation with powerful social storytelling. Born in Nairobi, his early piano training and choral work laid the foundation for a career that would define modern Kenyan music.

Wainaina first gained national attention as a member of the acclaimed a cappella gospel group Five Alive, whose success across Kenya and Europe in the mid-1990s launched his professional career. He later studied at the Berklee College of Music, graduating with honors and receiving the prestigious Jack Maher Award for songwriting excellence.

He rose to prominence with landmark songs like “Daima Kenya”, embraced nationwide following the 1998 Nairobi bombing, and “Nchi ya Kitu Kidogo,” a bold critique of corruption that earned international recognition. His work as a social advocate includes ambassadorships for Transparency International (Kenya), the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and the United Nations, and his music has garnered numerous awards and nominations, including KORA All Africa Music Awards.

An accomplished composer and theatrical producer, Wainaina’s original works—including Lwanda, Man of Stone and Mo Faya—have been staged in Kenya and internationally, while his film and documentary scores have received critical acclaim. Appointed a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), he continues to create, perform, and inspire audiences worldwide through music that celebrates culture, unity, and social impact.
