I particularly adore the way they have integrated the living improvisatory tradition of folkloric music from Veracruz with its musical ancestors from the Baroque. The idea is musicologically sound, and it creates a fabulous live concert experience. –Craig Russell (CalPoly)
Tembembe Ensamble Continuo is a chamber group dedicated to the research and performance of baroque Hispanic music and the traditional music from Mexico called son. Its performances revive the festive spirit of the 17th century New Spain Fandango and the contemporary Mexican Fandango through music, song, and dance. Members of the group attended music schools in Mexico, Colombia, the USA and France, and teach in Mexico City and Cuernavaca.
Tembembe has performed extensively in México, the Americas, Europe and Asia, and has participated in numerous festivals and concert series.
Tembembe has collaborated with international groups and artists: Lila Downs; Celso Duarte; ensemble Los Otros, Bremen; ensemble Mare Nostrum, Rome (Andrea de Carlo, director), and Hesperión XXI, Barcelona (Jordi Savall, director).
In 2010, two of the group’s performances were nominated as “events of the decade” by Channel 22 NPTV, Mexico: the concert with Lila Downs in October 2006, and the concert with Jordi Savall at the 36th International Cervantino Festival.
